Speaking at Ignite San Diego is one of the most exhilarating experiences you could ask for. Speaking at Ignite San Diego means spending 5 minutes on stage in front of a huge crowd, sharing your passion or story, while your slides auto-advance whether you’re ready or not. But don’t take it from us! We’ve asked some of our past speakers to share why they loved speaking at Ignite.

Do you want to light up San Diego? Then accept the Ignite challenge! You will get much more out of the experience than you put into it.
Is there an investment of time? Yes.
Is there an investment of energy? Yes.
Does it require vulnerability? Yes.
Your reward? Invaluable lessons in public speaking while honing your PowerPoint skills plus a chance to shine on stage for 5 glorious minutes.
When choosing a topic, think in terms of what would grab YOUR attention. Pair that with a catchy title. Sometimes less is more. I was complimented on my two-word title, “Oh, Chute!” because it was short and creative. I’m a fearless skydiver and was dubbed a closet badass in a tweet by someone who saw the show.
If you’re one of the 18 chosen to speak, you’ll be receiving the congratulatory e-mail that strikes both terror and exhilaration in your heart. Do yourself a favor: attend the planning meetings and don’t wait until the last minute to practice. You’ll just cause yourself undo stress. And take advantage of the expertise and experience offered by the mentors.
The biggest challenge for me was limiting my presentation to 5 minutes while packing a punch and coordinating it all with 20 slides.
I always record my speeches on my iPhone and listen to them constantly to remember the gist of what I want to say. In this case, I took it a step further by practicing the lines while playing my slideshow on Power Point.
When the big night came, I was ready. It was a heady experience to excitedly mingle with the other 17 presenters as we nervously awaited our turn. Back stage, some reviewed notes while we all attempted to calm our jitters and encourage one another.
The crew fits you with a microphone and…….off you go! The best part is your adoring fans greet you with wild cheering and clapping. So what if you forget a line? In a mere 5 minutes, you’ll be joining a distinguished group of Ignite alumni and have a cool presentation under your public-speaking belt.
